Health insurance is provided for the house officer. Professional liability insurance is paid for by the Department of Surgery.
The current vacation period is three weeks per year.
Expenses will be paid for travel to meetings where the resident is making a presentation. Each chief resident attends a national surgical meeting of his/her choice at departmental expense.
There is no university housing. Residents and their families live in a variety of neighborhoods throughout Kansas City.
Moonlighting
In accordance with ACGME guidelines, there is no moonlighting permitted during the General Surgery residency. Though the ACGME allows moonlighting at institutions not affiliated with a residency program, it is the policy of the UMKC Department of Surgery that no moonlighting is allowed.
